About

The Company

License 2 Art is custom-made artwork, handcrafted from real license plates from each of the 50 United States. Each piece of artwork captures a unique art form, ranging from geographical maps to Marvel Comics to any specific idea that comes to mind. The process involves hand-drawing the specific artwork to have a canvas to work from; selecting the license plates to use to make the artwork unique with regards to geographical location, color, and/or a specific detail (e.g., Cowboy); cutting each of the license plates into the specific shapes needed to frame out the artwork; and finally, mounting and soldering each of the pieces together to create the final product.

How It Started

While sifting through storage and finding countless license plates that had been collected over the years and not wanting to discard the unique symbols of our country, the thought of using the license plates to create a wide variety of treasured memories came to light... License 2 Art!

The first piece of artwork created was a map of the United States. From there, the portfolio has expanded to what you see today in the gallery and what you will see in the future. There are no limits to what ideas can be transformed into license plate art.

The Designer

George Corcoran was in the field of education for 52 years. In addition to educating and guiding today's youth in the classroom, he also coached girls’ softball, helping shape student-athletes into understanding teamwork and collectively working towards a common goal. His years in education and coaching gave him the inspiration to allow his imagination to flourish. He credits his mother and two sisters with the foundation for his passion for art. He searched for a means to foster this love. George enlisted the help of Barbara McFarland, the owner of Liberty Belle Glassworks in Mount Laurel, NJ, to see how he could put his creativity into practice. She taught him how to incorporate the techniques for stained glass into license plate art. Each piece of artwork transformed the license plates into a unique creation.

People often ask, "Why do you do this?" The response is simple... It's seeing the look on the customers' face, when they see an idea transformed into art, that makes this craft worthwhile. It's the happiness that's important.
